“He studied sunspots and ended up studying the rings of the trunks to see if they could tell him something about the sun. It is not just a matter of knowing its age, the history of its forest remains marked in the drawings of the wood. The trees retain scars from fires and all kinds of natural disasters: earthquakes, hurricanes, diseases. Insects also leave marks on them. You can even check the age of a violin or piece of furniture by measuring the rings on its wood. A trunk is the log of an ecosystem. And cutting down a forest is not just an ecological tragedy; is literally destroying a historical data file. But trees write in language that cannot be seen. I wonder what my life would look like inside a log, what all those lines, knots and circumferences would mean.
I wonder how a collection of truncated beginnings, an abrupt end or a disappearance is drawn in their language."

“Él estudiaba las manchas solares y terminó dedicándose a estudiar los anillos de los troncos para ver si podían decirle algo sobre el sol. No se trata solamente de saber su edad, en los dibujos de la madera se queda marcada la historia de su bosque. Los árboles guardan cicatrices de los incendios y de todo tipo de desastres naturales: terremotos, huracanes, enfermedades. Los insectos también les dejan marcas. Se puede corroborar, incluso, la edad de un violín o un mueble midiendo los anillos de su madera. Un tronco es la bitácora de un ecosistema. Y talar un bosque no es solamente una tragedia ecológica; es, literalmente, destruir un archivo de datos históricos. Pero los árboles escriben en lenguaje que no se ve. Me pregunto cómo se vería mi vida en el interior de un tronco, qué significarían todas esas líneas, nudos y circunferencias.

Me pregunto cómo se dibuja en su idioma una colección de principios truncos, un final abrupto o una desaparición.”
